This typical 1800s large family portrait was actually in rather good condition considering its age. The chemicals used in the photo processing had broken down contributing to the faded appearance. However, sunlight had created more uneven fading on the lower right quadrant of the photo. Sunlight is one of the worst enemies of photographs. Tonal correction and conversion to a black and white picture, plus the removal of scratches and other damage, allowed fine detail to be restored to the photograph.
